World Series Final Game Draws 51M Viewers Across the US, Canadian and Japanese Markets.

The exciting extra-inning contest where the Los Angeles Dodgers defeat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-4 drew a combined 51 million viewers across the US, Canada, and Japanese markets. MLB reported this marks the most-watched World Series finale since the 1991 contest between the Twins and Braves.

Television Viewership Breakdown

Last Saturday’s memorable game secured 27.33M audience members on Fox networks, its Spanish-language channel and their streaming platforms. Per ratings data, it was the second highest-rated broadcast of the week.

It additionally stands as the most-watched Fall Classic matchup after the 2017 edition Game 7 between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Astros, which drew over 29 million. This marks a sixteen percent improvement over the last finale between the Washington Nationals and Houston Astros, which attracted 23.19 million.

In the Nielsen ratings, Game 6 ranked fourth, Game 4 was 7th, Game 5 came in 8th, and the third game landed in 13th position.

Global Viewership Numbers

In the Canadian market, the game recorded 11.6 million viewers on Sportsnet and the French-language TVA Sports channel. This was the most-watched English-language broadcast in Canada since the 2010 edition Vancouver Winter Olympics.

In Japan, where the final contest began at 9 PM in the local time zone, it averaged 12 million viewers. This came after last Friday’s Game 6 – where Fall Classic Most Valuable Player Yoshinobu Yamamoto gave up a single run in six frames – drew over 13 million viewers, making it the highest-rated Fall Classic matchup on a sole broadcaster in Japan.

Overall Totals and Trends

The entire seven-match series drew 15.71 million audience members on Fox, a 2% rise from last year’s Dodgers versus Yankees series. This represents the initial instance since 2015 and ‘16 that the Fall Classic has seen audience increases for two straight seasons.

Including the Game 1 broadcast on Univision, the total US viewership reached 16.1 million. The total Fall Classic viewership in the Japanese market was 9.7 million and 8.1M in Canada.

The full playoffs on Fox, FS1 and FS2 recorded 8.09 million watchers, an eight percent increase over the previous year and Fox’s strongest postseason performance after the 2017 season.

Major League Baseball reported that the World Series was broadcast in 203 countries and territories by 44 broadcasting partners in 16 different languages.
